BIS Introduces New Safety Standards for EVs in India

In a significant move towards enhancing the safety and reliability of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced two new sets of safety guidelines: IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024. These standards aim to improve the safety protocols for the main components of electric cars, buses, and trucks, with a particular focus on the powertrain, which includes critical parts such as the motor and transmission.

Focus on Safety for Electric Vehicles

The newly introduced guidelines target electric vehicles across various categories:

- L Category: Two-wheelers
- M Category: Four-wheelers
- N Category: Goods trucks

The BIS has emphasized that these standards are essential for promoting a safer, more sustainable, and efficient transportation system in the country. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, "These standards focus on the critical components of electric vehicles—the powertrain—ensuring it meets stringent safety requirements. Additionally, they emphasize the safety and performance of batteries, ensuring they are both powerful and secure."

Expanding Safety Measures

The introduction of IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024 brings the total number of local standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems, to 30. This extensive set of standards underscores India's commitment to ensuring the safe and reliable operation of electric vehicles on its roads.

Standards for E-Rickshaws and E-Karts

Recognizing the increasing popularity of electric vehicles beyond just cars and trucks, the BIS has also introduced IS 18294: 2023. This set of safety standards is specifically designed for e-rickshaws and E-Karts, ensuring that these vehicles are constructed and operated safely to protect both drivers and passengers.

Role of the Bureau of Indian Standards

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) serves as the National Standards Body of India under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. BIS plays a crucial role in the formulation, recognition, and promotion of Indian Standards. By introducing and enforcing these standards, BIS helps industries upgrade the quality of their products and services, contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of the country's transportation infrastructure.

Driving a Sustainable Future

These new safety standards are a pivotal step in India's journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation ecosystem. By ensuring that electric vehicles meet stringent safety requirements, the BIS is not only promoting the adoption of EVs but also ensuring that this adoption does not compromise on safety and reliability.

The introduction of these standards reflects India's proactive approach in embracing the future of transportation while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. As electric vehicles become increasingly prevalent, such measures will play a critical role in shaping a secure and efficient transportation landscape in India.
