Extension of Timeline for Filing Annual Returns by Battery Producers

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, has announced an important update for battery producers under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022.

Following a request from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) dated January 10, 2025, the Ministry has extended the deadline for filing annual returns for the financial year 2023-24 to March 31, 2025. This extension was granted in response to CPCB's recommendation and is in line with sub-rule (6) of Rule 13 of the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022.

Previously, through orders issued on July 10, 2024, and November 12, 2024, the deadline had been extended to December 31, 2024, from the original due date of June 30 as prescribed under sub-rule (11) of Rule 4.

Why the Extension?

The CPCB highlighted the need for more time for producers to comply with the filing requirements. Considering this request, the Ministry exercised its authority under sub-rule (6) of rule 14 of the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, to grant the extension.

What Does This Mean for Producers?

  1. New Deadline: Producers of batteries now have until 31 March 2025 to file their Annual Returns for FY 2023-24.
  2. Compliance Opportunity: The extension gives producers additional time to meet their legal obligations under the rules.
  3. Responsibility Remains: Despite the extended timeline, producers must ensure accurate and timely submission of their returns to avoid penalties.
