THIS IS THE RECENT UPDATE FOR ALL EXISTING LICENSE HOLDERS, NEW APPLICANTS, MANUFACTURERS, IMPORTERS, AND PRODUCT SELLERS FROM THE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE). IT SPECIFICALLY PERTAINS TO THE BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS QUALITY CONTROL ORDER (BIS QCO) FOR COOKWARE AND UTENSILS (WROUGHT ALUMINIUM UTENSILS).

The Cookware and Utensils (Quality Control) Order, 2023, issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aims to regulate and ensure the quality of cookware and utensils in India. Starting its enforcement six months from the publication date, the order provides specific timelines for compliance, with different schedules for Micro Enterprises and Small Enterprises.
Under this BIS QCO for the cookware and utensils (wrought aluminium utensils), all Cookware and Utensils must adhere to specific Indian Standards, including 1660:2009 (Wrought Aluminium Utensils).The order mandates the use of a Standard Mark on goods or articles specified in the attached Table. To comply, these items must adhere to the corresponding Indian Standard mentioned in the Table and bear the Standard Mark, obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as per Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. However, the order does not apply to goods or articles manufactured domestically for export purposes.
The Bureau of Indian Standards is designated as the certification and enforcement authority for the goods or articles specified in the Table. According to the BIS QCO for the cookware and utensils (wrought aluminium utensils) anyone found contravening the provisions of this order is subject to penalties under the relevant provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
BIS QCO for the cookware and utensils (wrought aluminium utensils) is part of the government's effort to ensure the quality and safety of cookware and utensils in the market, protecting consumers and promoting standardization within the industry.
