27th SEPTEMBER 2023
The Ministry of Textiles in India, based in New Delhi, has introduced a new regulation known as the Agro Textiles (Quality Control) Order, 2023. This decision, made on September 27, 2023, by the Central Government, exercising its authority under various sections of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016), aims to promote public welfare by ensuring that specific agricultural products adhere to high-quality standards.
This regulation is set to take effect on April 1, 2024. Its applicability extends to goods or articles outlined in a schedule attached to the order, with the exception of those designated for export.
According to the BIS QCO for the agro textiles (crop cover and fruit skirting bags), the goods specified in the schedule must comply with the corresponding Indian Standard mentioned in the schedule. Furthermore, they are required to bear a Standard Mark, which can only be obtained through a license issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards. This process follows the guidelines outlined in Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
According to the BIS QCO for the agro textiles (crop cover and fruit skirting bags) any individual found to be in violation of this order may face penalties in accordance with the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016). In essence, this regulatory measure has been instituted to guarantee that agricultural products meet established quality standards, contributing to the overall safety and well-being of the public.
