BIS QCO FOR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES FOR KITCHEN (SAFETY OF HOUSEHOLD AND SIMILAR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES PARTICULAR REQUIREMENTS RANGE HOODS)

OVERVIEW

Under the authority granted by section 16 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, the Central Government, in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards, deems it necessary and expedient to issue the Electrical Appliances for Kitchen (Quality Control) Order, 2023, in the public interest. This order, set to come into force six months after its publication in the Official Gazette, mandates that goods or articles specified in both Table-1 and Table-2 comply with the corresponding Indian Standards listed in the same tables.

According to this directive, all Electrical Appliances for the Kitchen must comply with the Indian Standard 302 (Part 2/Sec 31): 2009, specifically concerning the (Safety of household and similar electrical appliances - particular requirements - range hoods). Furthermore, as per mentioned in the BIS QCO for electrical appliances for kitchen (safety of household and similar electrical appliances particular requirements range hoods) they must bear the Standard Mark, obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, in accordance with Scheme-1 of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. Notably, there are exemptions in place, such as the non-application of this order to goods or articles manufactured domestically for export purposes. Additionally, micro enterprises, as defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, will be subject to this order after twelve months from the date of publication, while small enterprises will come under its purview after nine months. Goods or articles specified in Table-2 will only be affected after eighteen months from the date of publication. The Bureau of Indian Standards is entrusted with the responsibility of being the certifying and enforcing authority for the goods mentioned in both Table-1 and Table-2. Any contravention of the provisions of this order will result in penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. This BIS QCO for electrical appliances for kitchen (safety of household and similar electrical appliances particular requirements range hoods) initiative aim to uphold stringent quality control measures for electrical appliances in the kitchen, ensuring adherence to established standards, and safeguarding public interests in the broader consumer landscape.
