Important information on the Indian Standard for the Legal Metrology-Material Measures of Length (Steel tape measures) (Quality Control) Order, 2023 that is relevant to all current licence holders, new applicants, producers, importers, and product dealers.

OVERVIEW

21st NOVEMBER 2024

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi, on November 21, 2023, has issued an important order regarding the measurement standards for various goods. This order, known as the "Legal Metrology- Material Measures of Length (Quality Control) Order, 2023," will be effective six months from its publication in the Official Gazette. The order specifies that goods listed in a table must meet specific Indian standards and carry the Standard Mark, obtained through a license from the Bureau. There are exceptions for goods manufactured domestically for export. Micro and small enterprises have extended timelines for compliance. The Bureau is responsible for certification and enforcement, and violations will result in penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
