UPDATE FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (DEPARTMENT FOR PROMOTION OF INDUSTRY AND INTERNAL TRADE)

Updates concerning the Indian Standard that are relevant to all license holders are now in effect, as well as new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product dealers under the Safe Deposit Locker Cabinets (Quality Control) Order, 2023.

OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, issued an order on December 8, 2023, regarding safes, safe deposit locker cabinets, and key locks. This order, known as the Safes, Safe Deposit Locker Cabinets, and Key Locks (Quality Control) Order, 2023, will take effect six months after being published in the Official Gazette.

The order specifies that the goods or articles listed in the table must adhere to corresponding Indian Standards and bear the Standard Mark. To obtain the Standard Mark, a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards is required, following the regulations of Scheme-1 in Schedule-II.

It's important to note that this order doesn't apply to goods manufactured domestically for export. Micro enterprises have a twelve-month grace period for compliance, and small enterprises have nine months.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is designated as the authority responsible for certifying and enforcing compliance with the order. Anyone violating these provisions may face penalties under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
