The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, particularly the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, issued a significant directive on October 17, 2023, named the Copper Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023. This directive is established under the authority granted by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, with the aim of ensuring specific quality standards for copper products. The government, after consultations with the Bureau of Indian Standards, deems it necessary for public welfare. The key points of the directive include its official name and commencement, starting six months after the announcement in the Official Gazette.

BIS QCO for the copper products (wrought copper tubes for refrigeration and air-conditioning purposes) mandates the use of a special mark on certain copper products, signifying compliance with set standards, requiring manufacturers to obtain permission (license) from the Bureau for its use. Exceptions are made for products manufactured domestically for export, and smaller businesses are given extended timelines for compliance.

According to BIS QCO for the copper products (wrought copper tubes for refrigeration and air-conditioning purposes) the Bureau is designated as the authority to oversee and enforce these rules. Violation of these rules may result in penalties as per the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. In essence, the government is implementing these rules to ensure the quality of copper products, with the Bureau overseeing adherence and imposing consequences for non-compliance.
