Introduction
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes safety footwear, vital for protecting the feet and lower limbs in various workplaces. These shoes offer Impact Protection. Safety footwear is essential in professions like construction and manufacturing. Employers provide the right footwear based on workplace hazards.
In summary, safety footwear is a crucial part of PPE, safeguarding feet from various workplace risks. It includes features like impact and puncture protection, insulation against electricity, slip resistance, and more. Wearing the appropriate safety footwear is vital for the well-being of workers in different industries.
Safety footwear is like special shoes that keep your feet safe at work. There are rules and standards for making these shoes, and one of them is called IS 15298(Part 2):2016.
This standard tells us what these safety shoes should be like. Safety footwear has important features to protect your feet from getting hurt in accidents. It has a special part at the front to shield your toes, so even if something heavy falls on your foot, it won't get squished. It's also designed to withstand strong forces, like a big weight pressing down on it.
According to the Indian Standard, footwear is classified using the following code designations:
Code designation |
Classification
|
I |
Footwear made from leather and other materials, excluding all-rubber or all-polymeric footwear. |
II |
All-rubber (i.e. entirely vulcanized) or all-polymeric (i.e. entirely moulded) footwear. |
1. The shoes must also look like one of the designs mentioned in the Standard.
2. When you wear these shoes, you can't take out the inside part (called insole) easily, and you can't remove the front part that protects your toes (toecap).
3. This is to make sure your feet stay safe. In some workplaces, there might be extra risks, so the safety shoes need to meet more rules.
4. Depending on what's happening at your job, the shoes might need to meet these extra requirements, and there will be special markings on them to show they meet those rules.
5. To check if the shoes are following all these rules, there's a special place called a laboratory.
6. This lab has all the right equipment and people to test the shoes and make sure they're safe for you to wear at work.
7. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) must be applied on each piece of safety footwear and the outer packaging for each pair of footwear provided that the footwear to which this mark is thus applied meets all of the specification's requirements.
8. All markings must be made inside the tongue or on the top outer face of the boot to cause the least amount of damage while working.
9. Each item of safety footwear must also be clearly and permanently marked with the information specified in the Standard.
10. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
