PVC-U screen and casing pipes, also known as unplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipes, play a crucial role in well and borehole water supply systems. They serve a dual purpose:
Screen Pipes: These pipes feature minuscule perforations that permit water entry while effectively preventing dirt and contaminants from infiltrating. Functioning as adept filters, they ensure the purity of the water.
Casing Pipes: These pipes provide structural support to the well, encasing the screen pipes securely. Their robustness reinforces the well's overall integrity. These pipes are integral to water systems, particularly for underground water sourcing. Crafted from durable PVC-U material, they exhibit remarkable longevity and resistance to corrosion. Stringent regulations, such as IS 12818:2010 in India, are in place to guarantee the quality and efficacy of these pipes in delivering clean and dependable water supply, thereby safeguarding the health and well-being of communities relying on them.

Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) screen and casing pipes for bore/tube wells are covered by IS 12818:2010. BIS adopted this Indian Standard (Second Revision) after approval of the draft by the Plastics Piping Systems Sectional Committee, as finalized by the Civil Engineering Division Council.
This standard outlines the requirements for ribbed screen, plain screen, and plain casing pipes with nominal diameters ranging from 35 mm to 400 mm, all made of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride for water supply bore/tube wells.
1. The material used for making the pipe must primarily be unplasticized polyvinyl chloride.
2. Only additives essential for producing a durable pipe with a smooth surface finish and adequate mechanical strength under operating conditions may be included.
3. All pipe dimensions must strictly adhere to the specified standards.
4. Each pipe must be clearly and permanently marked with the manufacturer's name, nominal diameter, type of pipe, slot size, and effective length in the designated color.
5. Additionally, the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may be affixed to each pipe.
6. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use the standard mark (ISI Mark).

Benefits of BIS Certification
The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
PVC-U screen and casing pipes have been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 12818:2010 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark.
