INTRODUCTION

Rubberseed fatty acids are a variety of vegetable oil obtained from the seeds of the rubber tree, scientifically known as Hevea brasiliensis. As per the Rubberseed Fatty Acids (Quality Control) Order, 2022, the Bureau of Indian Standards has made it mandatory to obtain BIS certification for Rubberseed Fatty Acids. Rubberseed Fatty Acids shall conform to IS 12124:1987 and shall bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018.

To ensure the product quality of rubberseed fatty acids, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.

IS 12124:1987 for Rubberseed Fatty Acids.This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing method for Rubberseed Fatty Acids.There will be two types of material: soft and hard. The soft type shall be a distilled form of rubberseed fatty acid.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 12124:1987

1.     The fatty acid of rubberseed oil obtained by hydrogenation either before or after distillation shall be considered hard type.

2.     The material shall be produced by distilling crude rubberseed fatty acid, which is obtained by splitting rubberseed oil.

3.     A minimum flash point is required if a solvent is used to produce oil or fatty acid.

4.     The material shall be free from sediments, contaminants, suspended and other foreign matter, and separated water.

5.     It shall be clear on melting. The material shall also meet the requirements given in the standard.

6.     Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 12124:1987.

7.     The material must be packed in suitable containers.

8.     The containers must be securely closed and marked with the name and grade of the material, net mass, batch number or lot number, month and year of manufacture, and the manufacturer's name and trade mark. The container may also be marked with the standard mark (ISI Mark).

9.     The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license for Rubberseed Fatty Acids from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

10.  To obtain a BIS certificate for Rubberseed Fatty Acids, the manufacturer must ensure that Rubberseed Fatty Acids conform to applicable Indian standards.
