INTRODUCTION
Shunt power capacitors, also referred to as power factor correction capacitors or shunt capacitors, are electrical components employed within power systems with the aim of enhancing the power factor of an electrical network.
To ensure the product quality of shunt power capacitors, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 13585 (Part 1): 2012 for Shunt power capacitors of the non - Self - Healing type for ac systems. This Indian Standard (Part 1), which is identical to IEC 60931-1: 1996 issued by the International Electro technical Commission (IEC), was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on the recommendation of the Power Capacitors Sectional Committee. This standard cover 'Shunt power capacitors of the non-self-healing type for alternating current systems with rated voltages up to and including 1000 V - Part 1: General - Performance, testing and rating - Safety requirements - Guide for installation and operation.
The objective of this standard is to:
· Develop uniform rules for performance, testing, and rating
· Develop specific safety rules
· Serve as a manual for installation and operation
This standard specifies the specifications for capacitors.
1. The capacitor must meet the standard's quality, safety, and performance requirements.
2. Before delivery, every capacitor must have undergone routine testing by the manufacturer.
3. Type tests are performed to ensure that the capacitor meets the specified characteristics and operation requirements outlined in this standard in terms of design, size, materials, and construction.
4. The Firm must declare the types of Capacitors that they intend to cover under the Licence.
5. The scope of the Licence may be limited based on the Manufacturer's manufacturing and testing capabilities.
6. Labelling and marking shall be carried out in accordance with IS 13585 (Part 1):2012/ IEC 60931-1:1996.
7. Each capacitor unit must mark with the information as specified in the standard.
8. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on the product provided that the product so marked meets all specification requirements.
9. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
TESTS
The test is classified as:
Routine Test
· Capacitance Measurement and output calculation
· Measurement of the tangent of the loss angle of the capacitor
· Voltage tests between terminals
· Voltage tests between terminals and container
· Test of the Internal Discharge Device
· Sealing test
Type Test
· Thermal stability test
· Discharge test
· Destruction test
· Disconnecting test
The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
Shunt power capacitors have been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 13585 (Part 1):2012 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
