Sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, a sodium salt of the sulphoxylic acid formaldehyde, is a derivative of sodium hydrosulphite and formaldehyde. It is made by reacting sulphur dioxide with zink dust in an aqueous suspension to produce a zinc hydrosulphite solution. In this solution, formaldehyde and more zinc dust are added to form basic zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate, which is then decomposed with caustic soda to form sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and insoluble zinc hydroxide.
To ensure the product quality of sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 4505:2015 covers Sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. This standard specifies the requirements, sampling, and testing method for sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate dehydrate, which is commercially known as sodium sulphoxylate formaldehyde.
1. The sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate must be in the form of small white lumps or granules.
2. It must be soluble in water at room temperature, forming a clear solution with a concentration of up to 50%.
3. The material is hygroscopic in nature. When tested in accordance with prescribed methods, the material must meet the standard's requirements.
4. Packing, storage, and marking must be done as per IS 4505: 2015.
5. The material must be packed in airtight black plate containers of 50 kg capacity with a polyethylene liner that are sound, clean, and dry.
6. The container must be stored in a cool, dry place away from acids or acidic environments.
7. Containers must be securely closed and labelled with the information specified in the standard.
8. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each container of Sodium Formaldehyde Sulphoxylate or printed on the label applied to it, provided that the material so marked meets the requirements of the specification.
9. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
Sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 4505:2015 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
