IS 11946:1987 covers Soft Magnetic Iron strips. This standard specifies the requirements for cold-rolled soft magnetic iron strips used primarily for electromagnetic applications like relay yoke, armature, and the like in electrical machinery and apparatus. The standard requires that all general requirements for the supply of cold-rolled soft magnetic iron strips be met. Strips may be supplied in coils or straight lengths, subject to mutual agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 11946:1987

1.     The chemical composition of the material shall be as per standard.

2.     The material must be uniform in composition and micro and macrostructure, sound and free from physical defects or flaws both externally and internally.

3.     The strips as received must be smooth and flat, with no waviness, bow, bend, or buckle.

4.     The material in the coil must be uniformly treated, with uniform hardness and characteristics, so that it uncoils free from waviness.

5.     Each strip must be treated on both sides with a non-hardening rust-preventive oil that is easily washable with an aqueous alkali solution.

6.     Each bundle or package of strips or tag attached to each coil must bear the manufacturer's name and trade mark, quality/grade, product dimension, cast or identification mark, net and gross weight, and the dispatch date.

7.     The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

8.     The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
