INTRODUCTION
Stainless steel sheets and strips are flat, thin parts made from a special kind of steel. This steel doesn't easily rust or get damaged, because of the metals like chromium and nickel in it. Therefore it is used in different industries such as construction, automotive, food processing, medical equipment, and aerospace etc.
To ensure the product quality of stainless steel sheets & strips, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
This standard specifies the requirements for stainless steel sheets and strips used in the manufacture of utensils. The general requirement for material supply shall be in accordance with IS 1387: 1967. Unless otherwise specified in the order, the processes used to manufacture the steel are at the discretion of the manufacturer.
1. Stainless steel sheets and strips must be free of harmful defects such as scales, rust, blister, lamination, cracked edges, and seams.
2. The chemical composition of steel must meet standard requirements.
3. Packing and marking must be done in accordance with IS 5522.
4. Sheets and strips must be securely packed in paper and wrapped in hoop iron with wooden battens underneath to prevent damage during transit.
5. Every bundle or package of sheets, strips, and coils shall be legibly marked with paint displaying the manufacturer's name or trade-mark, mass, thickness, size, grade, and the cast number or identification marks, allowing the materials to be traced back to the cast or casts from which they are made.

7. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
