INTRODUCTION
Stainless steel welding electrode core wire is a special kind of wire used in welding to join or fix stainless steel stuff. It's a crucial part of welding tools used in different welding methods like shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and gas metal arc welding.
To ensure the product quality of stainless steel welding electrode core wire, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 10631:1983 classifies Stainless Steel for Core Wire for Electrodes as Billets and Wire Rods of various steel designations based on their chemical composition. This standard specifies the requirements for stainless steel billets and wire rods used to produce welding electrode core wire.
1. The steel shall be made through the electric melting process.
2. Each ingot/billet must undergo sufficient reduction and discard to ensure the absence of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects.
3. Billets must be free of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects.
4. The wire rods must have a clean finish, depressions, scratches, and scale that would adversely affect the welding characteristics or the operation of the equipment.
5. A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests are to be performed according to the methods specified in the standard.
6. Material must meet the requirements specified in the standard when tested.
7. Marking shall be done as per IS10631:1983. Unless otherwise agreed, the material shall be marked with the cast number, name or trade mark of the manufacturer.
8. The product may also be marked with a Standard mark (ISI Mark).
9. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license for stainless steel for welding electrode core wire from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
Stainless steel welding electrode core wire has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 10631: 1983 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
