IS 8951:2001 covers steel cast billets ingots, billets & blooms. This standard specifies the specifications for carbon steel cast billet ingots, billets, and blooms used in the manufacture of high carbon steel wire rods. The requirements of this standard shall also apply to billets and blooms produced by the continuously cast process.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 8951:2001

1.     Steel for high carbon steel wire rods must be of five grades, namely grades X, E, F, G, and H, as specified in the standard based on their chemical composition.

2.     The general requirements for material supply shall be in accordance with ARE 8910.

3.     The manufacturing process is left to the manufacturer's discretion.

4.     Marking shall be done as per IS 8951:2001.

5.     The ends of cast billet ingots, billets, and blooms must be painted with a suitable color and legibly stamped or painted with the cast number and the manufacturer's name or trade mark. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

6.     Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
