BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR DIE BLOCKS

Product Description

BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR DIE BLOCKS IS 5518:1996

INTRODUCTION

The steel used for die blocks is a specific type that is carefully chosen for their creation. Die blocks are strong tools, so the chosen steel is known for being very durable, hard, and resistant to damage. This steel remains strong even when there's a lot of pressure or frequent use. It's essential for making accurate and lasting shapes in materials like metals.

To ensure the product quality of steel for die blocks, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards

IS 5518:1996 covers steels for die blocks for drop forging. This standard specifies the requirements for steels for die blocks in square, rectangular, and circular sections for drop forging.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 5518:1996

1.     The material must be conditioned appropriately during the manufacturing process to remove any surface impressions that could lead to defects in the finished products.

2.     The material must be free of internal flaws such as pipe and flakes, and it must be free from harmful surface defects such as seams, laps, and cracks that extend beyond the machining tolerance.

3.     The general requirements for material supply shall comply with IS 8910: 1978.

4.     Depending on the order, the steel shall be supplied in annealed or hardened and tempered condition.

5.     When tested, annealed steels must have the Brinell hardness as specified in the standard.

6.     Each bar larger than 50 mm in diameter or equivalent cross-section and each die block must be suitably marked with the manufacturer's name or trade-mark, as well as the cast number or any other identification mark that allows the cast number and grade to be traced.

7.     The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each bar, bundle of bars, or test certificate.

8.     The marking shall be done in accordance with the provisions of the Indian Standard, provided that the product thus marked conforms to all of the specification’s requirements.

9.     The manufacturer must obtain a BIS licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

TESTS

The following test shall be done in accordance with the method specified.

·       Chemical composition

·       Ladle analysis

·       Hardness

·       Dimensional tolerances

·       Ultrasonic test

·       Additional test
