INTRODUCTION
Steel for high temperature bolts is a special kind of steel that stays strong even when it gets really hot. It is used to make bolts and screws for machines like boilers and turbines, where it can get super hot, so everything stays put and safe.
To ensure the product quality of steel for high temperature bolts, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 14331:1995 covers steel for. This standard specifies the steel for fasteners for applications at temperatures above 3000 degrees Celsius, up to the maximum service temperature specified in the standard, which is 6500 degrees Celsius.
1. The manufacturing process used in the production of steel shall be left to the discretion of the manufacturer.
2. A sufficient amount of discard must be made from each ingot to ensure that the bars are free of piping, harmful porosity, undue segregation, and other defects.
3. The reduction from a cast ingot to the final bar size must be at least four times, and the reduction from a continuously cast billet to the final bar size must be at least six times.
4. Surface defects such as scales, grooves, laps, cracks, and surface decarburization must be included in the machining allowance as agreed upon by the manufacturer and the purchaser.
5. The general requirement for material supply shall be as per IS 8910:1978.
6. Packing and marking shall be done as per IS 14331:1995.
7. The ISI mark may also be applied to the material.
8. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
9. The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, quality control, and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
TESTS
Tests shall be carried out as per the specified method.
· Macro etch test
· Surface conditions
· Ultrasonic tests
· Elevated temperature properties
Benefits of BIS Certification
The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
CONCLUSION
Steel for high temperature bolts has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 14331: 1995 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
