BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR LAMINATED SPRINGS IS 3885 PART 2: 1992

Product Description

BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEEL FOR LAMINATED SPRINGS IS 3885 PART 2: 1992

INTRODUCTION

Steel for laminated springs is a special kind of steel used to create layered springs. These springs consist of many thin steel layers stacked on top of each other. They're commonly used in vehicles, machines, and some tools to offer flexibility and absorb shocks.

To ensure the product quality of steel for laminated springs, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.

IS 3885 part 2:1992 covers steel for laminated springs.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 3885 part 2: 1992

1.     This standard specifies the requirements for hot rolled steel rib and groove sections intended for the production of laminated springs for railway rolling stock.

2.     Steel shall be of the seven grades as specified in the standard. IS 8910:1978 specifies the general requirements for material supply.

3.     The steel shall be produced using any steelmaking process other than the Bessemer process. It must be followed by secondary reining or secondary vacuum melting.

4.     The size of the ingot billet or continuous cast billet for any given size of the finished steel product shall be such that a minimum reduction ratio of 16:1 is ensured from the minimum cross-sectional area of the ingot, billet, or continuous cast billet to the maximum cross-sectional area of the product. However, other reduction ratios may be agreed upon subject to mutual agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

5.     The hot-rolled material must be free of harmful defects such as seams, folds, laps, cracks, deep pits, grooves, excessive scaling, and so on, which can cause cracking during hardening or impair serviceability.

6.     The surface should be reasonably smooth with no distortion, twists, or kinks.

7.     Marking and packing must be done in accordance with Indian standards.

8.     Each flat shall be marked with the manufacturer's name or trademark, grade, and the cast number or any other identification mark that allows the steel to be traced back to the cast from which it was made.

9.     Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

10.  Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
