INTRODUCTION
Steel for piston pin is a special kind of steel used to make piston pins. These pins are crucial in engines as they connect the piston to the rod. They must be strong and resistant to wear to handle the tough conditions inside the engine.
To ensure the product quality of steel for piston pins, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 11952: 1986 covers steel for piston pins. This standard specifies the requirements of chemical composition and mechanical properties of steels used in the production of piston pins. This standard was created in order to regulate the quality of steel used in the manufacture of piston pins.
1. The steel must be produced using a primary process and then refined using one of the refining processes such as argon rinsing, vacuum treatment, electro flux refining, or synthetic slag refining.
2. The chemical composition of steel must meet the requirements of the standard.
3. Mechanical properties in the heat-treated condition must be consistent with those given in Table 3 of the standard.
4. When tested, the grain size must be fine grain, ideally 5-8.
5. The bright bar steel must be treated with appropriate rust preventives and packaged in suitably wrapped bundles.
6. Each wooden case must have a metal tag with the manufacturer's name and trademark, steel grade and size, and the cast number or any other identification mark.
7. A standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.
8. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
TESTS
The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the standard.
· Chemical composition
· Mechanical properties
· Hardness
· Grain size
· Hardenability
The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
Steel for piston pin has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 11952: 1986 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
