INTRODUCTION
Steel rivet bars are long, cylindrical pieces of steel specifically designed for use in riveting applications. They find use in various construction and engineering projects and remain a recognized and trusted method in certain industries. Known for their strength and reliability, steel rivet bars are particularly suitable for heavy-duty applications where welding or other fastening methods might not be as effective or appropriate.
To ensure the product quality of steel rivet bars, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 1148:2009 covers steel rivet bars (medium and high tensile) for structural purposes. This standard specifies the requirements for medium and high tensile rivet bars with diameters up to 40 mm for structural applications.
IS 8910 specifies the general requirements for the supply of rivet bars for structural purposes.
1. Rivet bars must be made from steel that has been produced using open-hearth, electric, duplex, basic oxygen, or a combination of these processes.
2. If the manufacturer employs another process, the purchaser's prior approval should be obtained.
3. Steel must be delivered semi-killed or killed. Unless otherwise specified, bars must be supplied in hot-rolled conditions.
4. Rivet bars must be well and cleanly rolled to the specified dimensions and tolerances.
5. The finished material must be free of surface and internal flaws that would be detrimental to the material's end-use.
6. Rivet bars must be securely bundled, and a metal tag attached to each bundle must be marked with the following information:
a) The manufacturer's name or trade-mark, and
b) A cast number or identification mark that allows the steel to be traced back to the cast from which it was made.
7. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.
8. Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
TESTS
The following test shall be carried out as per the specified standard.
· Tensile test
· Bend test
· Shear test
· Hot compression test
· Chemical composition
The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
Steel rivet bars has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 1148: 2009 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
