INTRODUCTION
Steel tubes are like long, strong pipes made of steel, which is a very tough metal. These pipes can be big or small, thin or thick, and they have many uses like building things, plumbing, making stuff in factories, and even in vehicles. They are great because they're strong and don't easily get damaged by things like rust.
To ensure the product quality of steel tubes, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 1161: 2014 covers steel tubes for structural purposes. This standard specifies the requirements for hot-finished welded (HFW), hot finished seamless (IFS), electric resistance welded (ERW), or high-frequency induction welded (HRIW) and plain carbon steel tubes for structural purposes.
1. Steel tubes covered by this standard must be designated by their nominal bore and classified as 'Light,' 'Medium,' or 'Heavy,' depending on the wall thickness.
2. Depending on the yield stress of the material, they will be graded as Y St 2 10, Y St 240, and Y St 3 10. As a result, the designation of steel tubes must include the nominal bore of the tube, wall thickness classification, and material grade.
3. General requirements for the supply of steel tubes for structural purposes must conform to IS 1387.
4. The tubes must be made of steel in accordance with the specifications.
5. The standard sizes and weights of structural tubes shall be as specified in the standard.
6. The tubes must be cleanly finished and relatively free of scale.
7. They must be free of cracks, flaws on the surface, laminations, and other flaws.
8. Steel tubes must be made from hot rolled steel strips in accordance with IS 10748.
9. Marking shall be done in accordance with IS 1161:2014.
10. Each tube must be suitably marked with the manufacturer's name or trade-mark, as well as the tube's class.
11. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the tubes.
12. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
13. The BIS issues a license based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.
TESTS
The following test shall be done in accordance with the method specified.
· Flattening test
· Cold bend test
· Mechanical test
· Length
· Workmanship
· Dimension and weight
· Material (Chemical composition)
The BIS registration provides the following benefits:
1. Increase sales: BIS-registered products are more likely to be of higher quality and attract more customers.
2. Reduce the amount of money spent on quality maintenance: Upon getting certification, there's no need to follow separate quality guidelines for products.
3. Enhance product credibility and reduce environmental risk: BIS-certified items are genuine and trustworthy because they work really well and last a long time.
4. Ensure the highest level of quality and dependability: The presence of a BIS registration number implies that the product is of high quality and dependability.
5. Ensure the organization’s expansion: BIS certification boosts your product’s reputation, resulting in significant growth and market exposure.
Steel tubes has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 1161: 2014 standard. Manufacturers cannot import, export, or sell this product in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
