INTRODUCTION

This standard does not address the wire requirements for hollow U-shaped ribs.

There are three-wire grades designated as Grades 1, 2, and 3.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 4223:1975

1.     The steel shall be produced using an open hearth, an electric, a duplex, a basic oxygen process, or a combination of these processes.

2.     All finished wires must be well and cleanly drawn to the specified dimensions.

3.     The wire must be in good condition, with no splits, surface flaws, rough, jagged, imperfect edges, or other harmful surface defects.

4.     The wire must be supplied in any of the standard sizes.

5.     The general requirements for material supply shall be in accordance with IS 1387:1967.

6.     Packing and marking shall be done as per Indian standards. Steel wires for umbrella ribs must be supplied in coils and wrapped in gunny bags unless otherwise specified by the purchaser.

7.     Each coil or bundle of wire must be compactly bound and fastened and must bear a tag marking the size, length, and mass of the wires, as well as the name or trade-mark of the manufacturer.

8.     Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

9.     Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
