BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STRUCTURED WALL PLASTICS PIPING SYSTEM IS 16098 (PART 1): 2013

INTRODUCTION

Structured wall plastics piping system is a type of plumbing setup made from plastic materials. It is commonly used for various applications, including drainage, sewerage, and other fluid transportation needs, and is known for its added strength and durability

The guidelines for structured wall pipe used in draining and sewage systems without pressure are outlined in IS 16098 (Part 1):2013. The Bureau of Indian Standards officially accepted this Indian Standard IS 16098 (Part 1) after it was endorsed by the Civil Engineering Division Council and finalized by the Plastic Piping Systems Sectional Committee.

This standard defines the criteria for pipes and fittings with a smooth external surface, categorized as Type A. It pertains to non-pressure systems for underground drainage and sewage that rely on PVC-U structured wall piping systems. The standard encompasses PVC-U structural wall pipes and fittings, with or without built-in sockets, elastomeric sealing ring joints, or solvent cement welding joints. It is applicable to pipes and fittings with specified outside diameters ranging from 110 mm to 1200 mm.

The piping systems defined by this standard exhibit resistance against corrosion induced by water with a broad pH range. This includes water from households, surface runoff, and groundwater. However, for situations involving chemically polluted wastewater like industrial discharges, it is imperative to take into account both chemical resistance and temperature tolerance when utilizing a piping system that adheres to this standard.

TESTS

The following test shall be carried out following the method prescribed.

·       Melt flow rate

·       Resistance to internal pressure

·       Dimensions of pipes and fittings

·       Oven test

·       Impact strength

·       Flexibility

·       Water tightness

·       Thermal stability
