INTRODUCTION
Sulfate-Resisting Portland Cement is designed for use in construction projects where sulfate exposure is a concern. It provides longer-lasting and more durable concrete structures in sulfate-rich environments. It's commonly used in projects like foundations, basements, retaining walls, and structures in coastal areas.
To ensure the product quality of sulphate resisting portland cement, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 12330 cover Sulphate Resisting Portland cement. This standard specifies the manufacturing, chemical and physical requirements and testing of sulphate resisting Portland cement.
1. Sulphate-resistant Portland cement shall be produced by grinding and intimately mixing calcareous and argillaceous and other silica, alumina, and iron oxide bearing materials burning them at clinkering temperatures and grinding the resulting clinker to produce cement capable of meeting this specification.
2. After burning, no material other than gypsum, water or both, and not more than one percent of air-entraining agents shall be added.
3. Sulphate Resisting Portland cement (SRPC) is a type of Portland cement in which the amount of Tricalcium Aluminate (C3A) is less than 5%, and the combined amount of C3A and calcium aluminoferrite (C4AF) is less than 25%, which reduces the formation of sulphate salt.
4. The probability of sulphate attack on concrete is reduced when sulphate salts are reduced.
5. When tested in accordance with the methods specified, sulphate-resistant Portland cement must meet the chemical and physical requirements specified in the standard.
6. A laboratory shall be adequately maintained, in which the various tests shall be carried out according to the methods specified in the standard.
7. Packing and Marking shall be done as per the requirements of IS 12330.
8. The BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be printed on each bag or drum of Sulphate resisting Portland cement on the label applied to it, provided that the material in each bag or package to which the mark is thus applied meets the specification.
9. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
