BIS Certification For Safety of Toys Part 3 Migration of Certain Elements.

Introduction

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has defined limitations for hazardous components that can migrate from toy materials under IS 9873 part 3 certification to assure the safety of toys in the Indian market. To verify conformity, manufacturers must have their products tested by authorized laboratories. This article provides an overview of the testing carried out for the migration of elements and how EVTL India assists companies with navigating the certification process.

MANDATORY TESTING

• Simulation of gastric acid contact - Toy material is exposed to simulated gastric acid to determine solubility and bioaccessibility of restricted elements if ingested by a child

• Extraction using absorption medium - The toy is placed in contact with mediums like a saline solution, acetate buffer, or vegetable oil for a specified duration. The medium is then analyzed to quantify migrated elements.

• Testing for migration of 19 restricted elements including Antimony, Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, Mercury, and Selenium which can be harmful if ingested.

• Testing as per specified contact conditions of duration, temperature, and medium volume depending on toy material.

• Sample preparation as per specified surface area to volume ratio provided in the BIS standard

• Use of specialized laboratory equipment and expertise for element migration testing as per standard method

• Testing performed by a laboratory accredited by NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories)
