Product Description

Several years ago, halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) cables had those merits: their high fire safety ability and lower toxicity than PVC cables. In order to maintain quality and safety, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has pushed forward a certification scheme for HFFR cables, which are designed for up to 1100V applications.

Introduction

Several years ago, halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) cables had those merits: their high fire safety ability and lower toxicity than PVC cables. To maintain quality and safety, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has pushed forward a certification scheme for HFFR cables, which are designed for up to 1100V applications. BIS marks product compliance with the existing norms and helps to upgrade the quality and ensure the trustworthiness of the product in the eyes of consumers.

MANDATORY TESTING

As per the BIS product certification scheme, HFFR cables must conform to IS/ISO 6722-2 and undergo testing as per IS 10810. The key tests include:

  • Construction Review – To verify design, components like conductors, insulation and marks conform to the standards

  • Conductor Resistance Test – To measure and confirm resistance is within specified limits

  • High Voltage Test – Cables are subjected to 3KV AC for 5 minutes with no breakdown

  • Insulation Resistance Test – The insulation resistance is measured and must be over 100 megaohms per km

  • Heating Cycle Test – Cables are heated to maximum operating temperature for 4 hrs with no damage

  • Bending Test – Bent around test mandrel to verify flexibility

  • Impact Test – To assess integrity against external impacts

  • Flame Test – Cables are subjected to flame under controlled conditions to assess burning behavior

  • Acid Gas Generation Test – To determine halogen content

  • Smoke Density Test – Measure of smoke density during burning

Apart from testing, the BIS also evaluates factory quality control systems. Manufacturing processes are thoroughly audited to verify adherence to quality standards before granting certification for the ISI mark.

Conclusion

BIS certification of HFFR cables is essential for safety-critical electrical installations like hospitals, metros, data centers etc. It ensures cables meet stringent quality norms and safety parameters through rigorous testing. Certification also demonstrates compliance with Indian standards and generates higher consumer trust. With rising awareness and demand, more manufacturers are opting for BIS licencing.
