Marine plywood is water and moisture resistant plywood specially designed to use in marine construction, boat building and other water related projects. The reason behind being highly resistant to water and fungal attacks is it is made from selected hardwood veneers bonded together with waterproof adhesive. It works really well in humid environment and that’s why it is always high in demand.
To ensure the product quality and consumer safety, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling their products in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
Marine plywood falls under the IS 710: 2010 standard. This rule outlines the guidelines, sampling, and testing methods for Marine plywood.
1. Marine plywood, as per IS 710:2010, is classified as follows:
a) Grade - BWP
b) Dimensions:
2400 mm x 1200 mm
2100 mm x 1200 mm
1800 mm x 1200 mm
2100 mm x 900 mm
1800 mm x 900 mm.
c) Thickness: 3 mm to 25 mm
d) The manufacturer and purchaser may agree upon custom dimensions (length, width, and thickness) in addition to the standard sizes.
2. Manufacturing marine plywood with higher thickness requires more critical manufacturing capacity and infrastructure compared to plywood with lower thickness.
3. Based on the above, for Group of Licenses/Composite Set of Licenses (GoL/CSoL), one sample of the largest thickness shall be tested to cover marine plywood of thickness up to and including the tested sample.
4. The manufacturer shall declare the varieties of marine plywood they intend to cover in the License. The Scope of License may be restricted based on the manufacturer's manufacturing and testing capabilities.
5. During the License's operation, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BO) shall ensure that all the types and sizes covered in the License are tested in rotation, to the extent possible.
