As the name suggests, woven metallic and glass fibre tape is a type of conductive tape made by using metallic and glass fibre threads, such as aluminum, copper, or stainless steel. This tape is used for electromagnetic shielding, thermal insulation, fireproofing, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance, among other applications. Its broad range of uses makes it a valuable component in various industries, including electronics, automotive, aerospace, construction, and more.
To ensure the product quality of woven metallic and glass fibre tape, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
This standard specifies the requirements for woven metallic and glass fibre tape measures intended for use where rigid length measurements are not possible. It does not apply to high-precision tapes used in the field of mechanics or geodesy by industry (for example gauge blocks, geodetic wire, precision scales).
As per IS 1269 (Part 1): 1997, Woven Metallic and Glass Fibre Tape Measures of Length are classified as follows
Nominal Length |
Accuracy Class |
0.5 m to 5 m |
Class II or Class III |
Above 5m to 100m |
Class I, Class II or Class III
|
1. Under normal conditions of use, the materials used must be adequate, strong, stable, and resistant to atmospheric conditions, and they must meet the requirements specified in the standard.
2. The tape major could be made of a suitable fabric or plastic. Tape measures must be well-made, sturdy, and meticulously finished.
3. Clear, regular, and indelible graduated scales are required. The tape must comply with the requirements of the applicable Indian standard.
4. It is necessary to keep an adequately staffed and resourced laboratory in order to carry out the various tests outlined in the standard.
5. Labeling and marking must be done in accordance with IS 1269 (Part 1) 1997.
6. All products that meet the Indian Standard and are covered by the license must bear the standard ISI mark.
The following test shall be carried out for metallic and glass fibre tape
· Bend Test
· Permanent Set Test
· Sticking Test
· Water Proofing Test
· Nominal Length
· Accuracy class
· Construction
· Graduations
· Coating stability test
CONCLUSION
Woven metallic and glass fibre tape has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 1269 (PART 1): 1997 standard. This product cannot be exported, imported, or sold in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
