Terephthalic acid is an organic chemical that is a member of the aromatic carboxylic acid family. Its lightweight lightness and moisture resistance make it a popular material for a variety of packaging applications, such as bottles for beverages, food, and personal care goods. Its acid-based polymers are used to make films and sheets for use in packaging, electrical displays, and solar panels.
To ensure the product quality of terephthalic acid, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 15030:2001 covers Terephthalic acid. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard after the Petroleum, Coal, and Related Products Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Organic Chemicals Sectional Committee.
This standard specifies the requirements and sampling and testing methods for pure terephthalic acid. Terephthalic acid is produced by oxidizing para-xylene, and it is also known as para phthalic acid, benzene para dicarboxylic acid, or 1,4 benzene dicarboxylic acid in the commercial world. By combining with glycols, it is used in the production of synthetic resins, fibres, and films.
1. The material must be in the form of a white, crystalline, free-flowing powder that is free of foreign impurities such as dust and dirt.
2. Terephthalic is not soluble in water, chloroform, ether, or acetic acid, but it is slightly soluble in alcohol and completely soluble in alkalis, and Terephthalic acid is extremely non-toxic.
3. When tested according to the method specified, the material must also meet the requirements specified in the standard.
4. The material shall be supplied in 1000 kg bulk containers of flexible woven plastic or in packages agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier.
5. The packages must be marked with the following information in accordance with the standard.
· Name of material
· Source of manufacture
· Net mass of the materials in the container
· Lot or batch number
6. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the containers.
7. Conforming to the requirements of this standard, the product(s) may be certified under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations framed there under.
8. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
· Moisture content
· Determination of colour
· Determination of Ash
· Acid value
· Determination of Iron, cobalt, manganese, and chromium
Terephthalic acid has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 15030:2001 standard. This product cannot be exported, imported, or sold in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
