INTRODUCTION

Textile-reinforced thermoplastic hoses are special hoses made to carry compressed air in industries. They're created by combining strong thermoplastic materials with textile reinforcement. This makes the hoses flexible and tough for moving compressed air.

To ensure the product quality of thermoplastics hoses for compresses air, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.

Thermoplastic Hoses (Textile Reinforced) for Compressed Air are covered by IS 12492:1988.The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard on November 9, 1988, after the Petroleum, Coal, and Related Products Division Council approved the draft finalized by the Rubber Products Sectional Committee. Because of the increased manufacture and use of thermoplastic hoses in developed countries, they are also being used in India; as a result, some manufacturers have begun producing them. Rubber and plastic houses have comparative advantages and disadvantages depending on the application.

Considering these changes and developments, BIS formulated a standard for thermoplastic hoses. This standard specifies the requirements, sampling methods, and testing procedures for thermoplastic hoses with textile reinforcement suitable for working pressures up to 1.4 MPa and application temperatures ranging from - 10 to + 55°C.

This standard covers the three types of hoses listed below:

Type 1 - industrial air hoses with a maximum working pressure of 0.7 MPa,

Type 2 - industrial air hoses with a maximum working pressure of 1.0 MPa, and

Type 3 - air hose for heavy-duty mining and construction work with a maximum pressure of 1.4 MPa.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 12492: 1988

1.     Tolerances and dimensions of hoses shall be as per the prescribed standard.

2.     Hoses must adhere to the standard's physical and performance specifications.

3.     The hose's colour (transparency), opacity, and other physical characteristics must all be consistent.

4.     A BIS license for Thermoplastic Hoses (Textile Reinforced) for Compressed Air is granted to use the standard mark as per IS 12492:1988.

5.     It is required to maintain an adequately staffed and resourced laboratory to conduct the various tests outlined in the standard. The test shall be conducted as per the method specified in the standard.

6.     Each length of the hose must be marked with the manufacturer's name or trade-mark, the IS number, the hose type, the nominal bore size, the design working pressure, and the quarter and year of manufacture.

7.     The above markings should be made at approximately 10-metre intervals for long lengths.

8.     Standard ISI Marks may also be applied to each length of the hose. To use a standard mark, the manufacturer must first obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards for Thermoplastics Hoses (Textile Reinforced) for Compressed Air.

9.     The Bureau grants a BIS license based on a successful assessment of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.

CONCLUSION


Thermoplastics hoses for compressed air have been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 12492:1988 standard. This product cannot be exported, imported, or sold in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
