Toluene is a colorless, transparent liquid hydrocarbon with a strong fragrant odor. Because of its outstanding solvent qualities and capacity to dissolve a wide range of compounds, it is widely employed as a solvent in a variety of industrial processes and products. Toluene is commonly found in paints, varnishes, adhesives, and cleaning agents.
It is also utilized as a raw material in the manufacture of chemicals such as benzene, xylene, and other polymers.
To ensure the product quality of toluene, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
IS 537:2011 covers toluene. The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard after the draft was finalized by Petroleum, Lubricants, and Related Products Sectional Committee and was approved by the Petroleum, Coal, and Related Products Division Council.
This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing techniques for toluene. Toluene is a raw material used in the production of alkylated, nitrated, and halogenated organic intermediates for petrochemical dyestuffs and fine chemicals industries. It is also employed as a solvent in formulating paints, coatings, adhesives, and inks. The material must meet the specifications specified in the standard.
