INTRODUCTION

To ensure the product quality of steel forgings, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.

IS 13387:1992 covers tool steel forgings for metal forming. This standard specifies the requirements for tool steel forgings used in metal forming operations.

According to IS 13387:1992, Tool Steel Forgings for Metal Forming classifies into Cold Forming and Hot Forming Designations.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 13387: 1992

1.     Forgings must be made from steel produced by an electric or other approved process, and the steel must be completely killed.

2.     Steel must be clean, and forgings must have minimal directional properties due to non-metallic inclusions.

3.     Each ingot must be reduced sufficiently by hot working and discard to ensure complete soundness, an adequately homogeneous structure, and the desired carbide distribution.

4.     Hot forgings between flat dies shall be used to produce long bars of rectangular, square hexagon sections.

5.     Hot forging shall be performed in a hammer or press with sufficient capacity to adequately work the raw material's core during forging.

6.     Each forging must be marked with the information as specified in the standard.

7.     The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to the material.

8.     The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from Bureau to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
