BIS CERTIFICATION FOR TOOLS AND DIE STEELS IS 3748:1990

Product Description

BIS CERTIFICATION FOR TOOLS AND DIE STEELS IS 3748:1990

INTRODUCTION

Tool and die steels are used in the manufacture of tools, dies, and other metalworking and industrial equipment. They are noted for their great hardness, which allows them to resist wear and abrasion while also providing outstanding polishability. They are designed in such a way that they keep their shape and dimensions during operational conditions.

To ensure the product quality of tools and die steels, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.

Tools and die steels comes under IS 3748:1990 This standard specifies the requirements for plain carbon and alloy tool and die steel in the form of bars, blanks, rings, and other shapes that can be hardened and tempered for cold and hot working applications.

REQUIREMENTS FOR IS 3748:1990

1.     Steel covered by this standard must be ordered and delivered based on (a) chemical composition or (b) chemical composition and annealed hardness.

2.     Unless otherwise agreed in the order, the processes used to make the steel and the product is left to the manufacturer's discretion, but the steel must be fully killed.

3.     Each ingot must have sufficient reductions and discards to ensure that it is free of piping, harmful segregation, and other defects.

4.     The material must be roughly machined, chipped, or ground to remove any surface imperfections that may cause defects in the finished products.

5.     The material must be free of potentially harmful surface defects such as seams, laps, and cracks. The material must also be free of flaws.

6.     Surface decarburization must be completely avoided in all materials supplied in machined and ground conditions.

7.     Each bar with a diameter greater than 50 mm or with equivalent cross-sectional area shall be stamped or suitably marked at the extreme with the following information: source of the manufacturer and cast number.

8.     The Standard Mark may also be applied to the material.

9.     Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).

TEST REQUIREMENTS OF IS 3748: 1990

The following test shall be carried out in accordance with the standard.

·       Chemical composition

·       Hardness

·       Dimensional tolerances

·       Ultrasonic test

·       Additional test
