Transparent float glass is a type of glass that is known for its smooth, flat surface and exceptional optical clarity. It is made by pouring molten glass over a bed of molten tin, letting it spread as it cools and solidifies, and then leveling it off. With this method, a glass sheet with less deformation is produced.
It offers natural light and clear vistas and is frequently used for windows, doors, mirrors in cars, glass furniture, and building facades.
To ensure the product quality of transparent float glass, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made it mandatory for manufacturers to undergo BIS registration and obtain the BIS ISI mark before selling it in the market. Manufacturers can use the ISI Mark on their products only after obtaining a license from BIS that is granted after BIS registration. The presence of the ISI mark on a product indicates that it complies with BIS's stringent quality standards.
Transparent float glasses are covered under IS 14900:2018.
The Bureau of Indian Standards adopted this Indian Standard after the Glassware Sectional Committee's final draught was approved by the Chemical Division Council. This standard specifies the specifications and the sample and testing methods for flat, transparent, clear float glass with glossy, plain, and smooth surfaces. This standard covers cut sizes or stock sheets that are square, rectangular, or other shapes. This standard does not apply to tinted, coated, frosted, heat-absorbing, or low-light-reducing glasses.
1. Float glass shall be made by allowing glass from a tank furnace to flow through a bath of molten tin in a regulated environment of nitrogen and hydrogen, resulting in a transparent glass sheet with flat and parallel surfaces for clear, undistorted vision and reflection.
2. Glass thickness shall be measured in line with Annex A.
3. On cut sizes, the length and width of the glass must be measured in accordance with Annex B of the standard.
4. The thickness tolerances must be as defined in the standard.
5. The length and width tolerances on cut sizes must be as specified in the standard.
6. The float glass must be packed in a shock-absorbing material, and they will also be packaged in a wooden case.
7. Each float glass package must be labelled with the information as specified in the standard.
8. Conforming to the requirements of IS 14900:2018, the product may be certified under the terms of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations formulated there under, and the product may be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark).
9. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark).
The following test shall be carried out for transparent float glass.
· Characteristic
· Visual light transmission
· Dimension and tolerances
· Optical faults
· Visual faults
· Bloom
Transparent float glass has been included in the mandatory ISI Certification Scheme under the IS 14900:2018 standard. This product cannot be exported, imported, or sold in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark imprinted.
