IMEI Number Registration Process: Applying and Required Documents

Introduction Of IMEI Number

In the era of digitalization, rapid technological advancements are accompanied by a growing risk of network-related fraud. Mobile phones have emerged as indispensable communication tools. According to a study by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), smartphones raked in a staggering USD 78 billion in revenue in 2019. However, the pandemic led to a projected dip to USD 71 billion, a 6% decline. Despite this, the issue of rampant phone theft persists, with millions of devices being stolen daily. In India alone, thousands of First Information Reports (FIRs) are filed for stolen mobile phones.

Amidst this backdrop, the IMEI number shines as a beacon of hope for tracking stolen phones. IMEI, or "International Mobile Equipment Identity," stands as a critical cornerstone within a mobile phone's architecture.

Every 3GPP and iDEN mobile phone, along with certain satellite phones, is assigned a unique IMEI number. Typically located within the battery compartment, this international mobile equipment identity can also be revealed on-screen by dialing *#06# using the MMI Supplementary Service code. In smartphone operating systems, it might be tucked alongside other system information in the settings menu. The IMEI number is bestowed upon a device by the manufacturer during its production. Immutable and unchangeable, this identity represents a mobile's lifeline.

Each IMEI number conforms to the standards of mobile communication, particularly the 3GPP TS 22.016 standard. It plays a pivotal role in international mobile equivalent identity tracking, aiding in pinpointing a device's current location. Moreover, the IMEI number enables the network to block access to lost mobile phones, thereby preventing unauthorized use.

In the realm of IMEI numbers, diversity reigns as different mobile device brands sport distinct identifiers. For instance, Samsung IMEI numbers differ from those of Nokia and other brands. In this symphony of unique digits, the IMEI number safeguards against phone theft aids in device recovery, and contributes to a safer digital landscape.

IMEI number registration is essential for the following entities and individuals:

1. Mobile Device Manufacturers or Brand Owners:

Manufacturers and brand owners must register on platforms like https://imeidb.gsma.com/ to obtain their IMEI registration certificates. This registration helps establish a secure and traceable device supply chain.

2. Importers of Mobile Equipment:

Importers of mobile equipment need to log in to the online portal using their user ID and password. They are required to submit an application form indicating the specific mobile handset lot intended for import to the Indian market. IMEI registration aids in customs clearance and regulatory compliance.

ICDR Validation:

The GSMA automated system, ICDR, scrutinizes the provided information against the global GSMA reporting body and its generated TACs.

Registration Certificate Allotment:

Upon validation, the registration certificate is granted for the import of mobile equipment, only if the information is verified as accurate.

Documents Required for IMEI Number Registration

1. Technical Specification Sheet:

Comprehensive details encompassing various fields, crucial for accurate registration.

2. Specific Model Declaration:

Precise identification of the mobile handset model targeted for IMEI certification.

3. Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA):

Importers seeking to import mobile equipment must procure a signed NDA from the source organization's director or owner.

4. Manufacturer Agreement:

Importers are mandated to secure a duly notarized Rs.100/- stamp paper. The agreement must be filled with information and content, bearing the signature of the organization's director or owner.
